Having had the pleasure of reviewing Anthony’s other books I am happy to review this one, which is the long awaited combination of all his other books updated in a compact mode. This book contains his own Repertory, Materia Medica, Potency choice, Dose, Therapeutics, and Prescribing multiple bowel nosodes.
The first thing I noticed was that one of my suggestions has been implemented. We now have a page index for his Repertory which was sadly missing from his earlier Repertory book. The other need-to-know is that he has listed Mutabile, E.Coli and Colibaccillinum all as Colibacillinum, as he says that the symptoms are virtually indistinguishable. The most important remedies for a symptom have been put in black type which is helpful. Also in the Repetory part of the book, there is a page on “Regional Leaders” e.g. Digestion Bac-7 Bac-10, Gaertner, and a couple of pages on “Themes” e.g. Bones – Morgan p. and Jealousy – Morgan g.
The second section of the book is the Materia Medica, which is set out in a beautifully clear manner. Each remedy starts with its keynote and is followed by the characteristics including those of the Mind, and the main therapeutic uses are given with some remedies. Next are Generalities, Physicals, General Modalities and lastly Related Remedies. The Materia Medica basically follows the same structure in each remedy, but with some more widely used remedies we are given extra information about cases he or colleagues have taken, which makes this section so very readable. When we arrive at Proteus he gives a full account of the proving in 2003, undertaken by the British School of Homeopathy in which Anthony was the supervisor in charge.
The next section is “Prescribing the bowel nosodes” and includes “Potency”, “Dosage” and “Frequency of dosing”. There is a great discussion called: “Prescribing a bowel nosode when a previously well indicated remedy has failed”, and also one titled: “Prescribing based on causation”. Here is discussed mental and emotional trauma, physical trauma and antibiotic damage, which are all essential reading. Also in this section is the guidance “Prescribing based on systems affected” and “Prescribing based on therapeutics”. I found these very comprehensive, with the discussion of specific disease symptoms, including all the well-known ones of the stomach and digestive tract, named respiratory diseases, named sexual diseases and skin diseases, and “Infectious diseases not mentioned elsewhere”. Even mental diseases are discussed, including eating disorders, OCD and post-natal depression amongst others. Lastly we find four pages on “Diseases seen in the Elderly” which include Alzheimer’s, Arthritis and Hypertension amongst others. Not only are most indicated bowel nosodes mentioned but also a suggested potency. This was all new to me and useful information.
The last section is called “Prescribing multiple bowel nosodes”. It is interesting that he has found a reference to multiple prescriptions in the Organon Para.162-171. He gives many protocols for specific problems, such as Allergies and sensitivities, Respiratory distress and Poisonings by medical drugs (e.g metformin, statins and social drugs.)
At the end of the book a useful therapeutic index and a list of reference books on the bowel nosodes is included.
So who is this book for? I would definitely recommend it for those who do not have his other bowel nosode books. It is also useful even if you have and use them on a regular basis, as this one volume combines the previous books and is updated. It is so much easier to find what you want quickly with Contents pages which have page numbers on them! Those newbies to bowel nosodes will find everything they need to start using these remedies for their patients as they are not found in our usual repertories. As it says on the back cover :
“Forty years of experience have gone into the compilation of this handbook. Complete details of Materia Medica, Repertory, Prescribing methods and therapeutics enable practitioners to use these wonderful remedies with confidence.”
