Mom, it’s time for the quiz again!
You mean another month has gone by?
I guess I should start making my announcements.
There’s probably no way of stopping you….
Two albums turned 20 years old this month.
Then shouldn’t they be in college?
I will not even bother to reply to that, since albums can’t go to college.
They can’t? Then why did I pay their tuition?
Mom!!!! Try and pay attention. 20 years ago…
…today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play!
No, Mom, it was not the Sgt. Pepper album! On May 6th, 1997 the Bee Gees released “Still Waters”.
Was he in jail?
Mom!!!! You’re supposed to be paying attention and not talking!
I think this is probably my favorite Post-Disco Bee Gees album. It has so many great songs on it like “Still Waters Run Deep”…
Excuse me, pardon me, but, isn’t “Still Waters” by The Four Tops?
Mom!!!!! Click below and you will see that it’s by the Bee Gees!
Yeesh! I hope I’ve cleared that up; so, where were we? Oh, there’s also “My Lover’s Prayer” which is another great song.
Excuse me, pardon me, but, isn’t “My Lover’s Prayer” by Otis Redding?
Ugh! Mom!!!! Do I have to explain everything to you? Take a trip with me down Memory Lane and observe who is singing “My Lover’s Prayer”:
Well, excuse me, but, come with me down Memory Lane and I will show you that “Lover’s Prayer” is, in fact, by Otis Redding!
OK, since settling this is impossible, let’s move on to the Oprah Winfrey Show.
There ya go! I’m a big fan of Oprah’s!
Good! I am extremely fortunate to have on tape the Bee Gees on Oprah from September of 1997 singing “Alone”–and don’t say it’s by someone else!
…sang “Alone At Last”, At Last! OK? Yeesh!
The other album that turned 20 this year is James Taylor’s…
“Hourglass” CD (released May 20, 1997).
This album won him his first grammy since the 1977 “JT” album (which is the album with “Handy Man” on it).
His only good song.
Mom!!! What about “Mexico”?
And what about “Carolina In My Mind”?
OK, “Carolina In My Mind”.
OK, OK, OK! You’ve made your point!
For “Hourglass” he won “Best Pop Album” in 1998. Here is James Taylor performing on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” on September 16, 1997.
I was pretty surprised to find this. It’s not easy to find videos of Conan’s old shows because apparently those are the intellectual property of NBC and they often get removed from Youtube pretty fast.
You know so much! (…about stuff no one cares about.)
This is a really rare video because not only is Conan younger but James sings “Long Ago and Far Away” which I’ve never heard him sing live before!
That’s from his folksinging days. He should have stuck with that instead of branching out into whatever it was he “branched out” to.
So…can we start the quiz now?
Who’s in the Quiz this month?
It’s “Rosemary Clooney”–again!
You mean Rosemary Clooney of the “4 Day Migraine”?
Yes, that Rosemary Clooney, and as you may remember, she works at Sabrina’s Cafe as a waitress, and I walked in today, sat down, and along comes Rosemary with, “Elaine, you have to do something about my eyes–they itch! It’s allergies, spring allergies, my eyes itch terribly, and they hurt and they’re irritated!”
So I got out my 30C Emergency Kit from my backpack–the Emergency Kit you’re all supposed to have with you? Remember?–and I said, “Hold out your hand,” and I tapped a few pellets of _________________30C into her palm and I said, “Just pop them in your mouth.” She did and took a swallow of water right away, probably thinking that, like Pharma drugs, you have to take them with water. I started to say, “They’ll melt in your mouth,” but it was too late. “I’m sure it will be OK,” I thought to myself.
I think she had no faith in them working, and neither did I since I didn’t have much of a case to go on, and it didn’t help that she came back 5 or 10 minutes later and said that her eyes were still itching! I felt very bad about that but said to give it a little more time.
She went outside, then came back seconds later, and said, “They’re better!” I said, “What??? Really????” I couldn’t have been more shocked, as less than a minute earlier they were “Still itching!” And I just want to add that before I left the restaurant, I looked for Rosemary to confirm that she really was, in fact, better and that her eyes had, in fact, stopped itching, and she confirmed it.
Update: It’s four days later and Rosemary tells me that she never relapsed and her eyes are still fine!
So, OK everybody, it’s your turn now, what remedy did I give? Write to me at [email protected] and let me know! The answer will be in the June ezine–and just in time for my birthday (June 20th!) so, mark that important date down on your calendar and I’ll see you in June! Bye-bye!
Is anybody here????
Oh look, it’s Sarah Q from Jordan!
Could everyone please just settle down?
The quiz is up! Hurray! How are you Elaine? Happy birthday!
Shh!!! Don’t tell anyone!
So this quiz is really clear.
There is just one rubric that we need and that is:
Eyes; Itching, air, open, amel: PULSATILLA
I’m voting for Pulsatilla!
I am confused though, is that what you gave her at first? If it was why didn’t it take right away? Maybe because she swallowed it rather than letting it melt? Thanks Elaine!
Sarah, I was thinking of giving her Pulsatilla; but, I decided to play it safe and give Euphrasia. Murphy has listed the word ALLERGIES in bold under Euphrasia; which, of course, is Eyebright. I don’t think she was really better outdoors; but, who knows.
Thanks for stopping by–all the way from Jordan! Is anybody else here today?
Hi Elaine and Shana!
Glad to hear Shana won first prize in the Rock ‘n’ Roll trivia contest 😀
Thanks! What else would you expect from someone nick-named Shanapedia!
My vote for this month’s quiz goes for Euphrasia.
It is the first remedy I would think of for seasonal allergies regarding the eyes.
That was my thought too! It was the eyes, and it was allergies; so… Bang! Euphrasia!
If I am wrong I will try again.
You’re not wrong, so don’t try again!
Do we have any other contestants?
Dear quiz masters,
Oh look! It’s the gang from Slovakia!
We are sending our regular unsuccessful contributions to your quiz…:)
Miroslav votes for: Ruta
In rubrics “itching eyes, eye pain”, there are many remedies, the rubric “allergy“ is not mentioned in the Repertory …So I’m forced to resort to my surmises: I would try Ruta, it’s a routine remedy for eyes … I was also thinking about Euphrasia…
Bingo! That was it! It was Euphrasia!
I also thought of Histamine as a routine remedy on itching.
Yes, that might have worked too.
But if I have to choose, I pick Ruta, she has eyes red, hot, painful, itching inner corners …
Actually, we have no information about the corners.
Jitka votes for: Histaminum
It’s a reasonable choice.
I made a chart of Rosemary´s three symptoms mentioned in the her case. The most striking symptom was itching, and according to a chart it should be Pulsatila or Sulfur. But in my opinion, none of them suit this case. So I decided to vote for a more versatile remedy for allergy itching and that’s Histaminum.
It makes total sense.
Hold on, Dr. Sebastiano Di Salvo from Italy is here!
my answer is Pulsatilla (second choice euphrasia)
Actually, you and I were so close, but I reversed them: Euphrasia was my first choice and Pulsatilla my second choice. In Murphy’s Repertory, there are 3 remedies in bold under Eyes, itching: Euphrasia, Pulsatilla and Sulphur. But in Murphy’s MM, “allergies” and “hay fever” are in bold only under Euphrasia.
Hahnemann: IN THE EYES A BURNING AND ITCHING, WHICH COMPELS SCRATCHING AND RUBBING.
True but again, the cause of the symptoms is most important. In Euphrasia, the cause of the itching is more likely to be allergies than in Pulsatilla. Murphy has “allergies” in BOLD in his Materia Medica under Euphrasia.
Sebastiano Di Salvo, Italy
I want to thank everyone for voting! Especially our big winner…Maria!!!!!
The most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard…..
Wait a minute! Stop the presses! This just in! Richard Dery from Canada votes for Euphrasia! Here’s Little Richard now, he says “I Got It!”
